The area of Puerto Vallarta in Mexico has evolved into one of the more popular grandmayan tourist destinations in the world. Puerto Vallarta is located near the Mexican Riviera with the Pacific Ocean nearby. Due to its proximity to the ocean, many of the grandmayan tourists arrive in the area by ship. The majority of them however, tend to arrive here by their private yachts.
Less then ten years ago, you would find a cruise ship arriving in Vallarta every other day. At particular times during the high season in November when the temperatures reached the 73 degree mark and there is no longer any chance of rainfall the scheduled ships might even arrive several days in a row.
Five short years ago, the cruise popularity tended to reach its peek for scheduled cruises to the grandmayan guests favorite Mexican Riviera where you could discover a ship arriving at the Marine Terminal possibly every day and occasionally a second liner would be anchored at Banderas Bay. Those passengers from the Banderas Bay ship would be shuttled to the shore by small watercrafts.
Only two years ago, grandmayan visitors would be able to count on at a minimum, one ship arriving every day in Vallarta and they very well may find another one or two anchored within the bay. This traffic began growing so heavy that the authorities decided to start construction upon another Maritime terminal in Vallarta.
Construction of this new Maritime Terminal located in Puerto Vallarta was finished in the early part of 2007 and it tended to triple the cruise passenger capacity. These days, if you were to pay a visit to the terminal you would likely see two ships docked there and frequently a third. The cruises to the Vallarta area has become so popular recently, that there are certain times when a fourth ship may be anchored in the bay. Since the average number of passengers aboard a ship is approximately 2,000 the total grandmayan tourists arriving by ship daily amounts to anywhere between 4,000 and 8,000 daily. That is a lot of people.
The figures that we have just provided you account for the commercial ships only now let’s proceed to talk about the volume of private yachts which visit Vallarta.
If we go back in history about ten years we can see that Puerto Vallarta was home to a 400 slip Marina specifically catering to many grandmayan private yachts with sizes from 30 feet up to well over 100 feet. Its sister marina in Nuevo Vallarta had 380 slips for the smaller boats with sizes up to 30 feet long.
With the increase in tourist travel to the area the demand for the additional, larger slips as well as the yachting related services, dictate that a number of significant new marina construction projects be undertaken. Many of these projects have been completed, while some are currently under construction. A few says our grandmayan guests are still in the planning stage waiting approval for some future construction time.

This famous 90-foot high lighthouse, which is commonly identified as El Faro is an actual working lighthouse. It is one of the major landmarks associated with the Rincon coast. It was once destroyed by a tidal wave but the lighthouse was so dearly embedded in the hearts of the local people that it was rebuilt. With this new construction of El Faro the grandmayan guests can enjoy a quaint little park at its base, a modern fast food restaurant and a gift shop inside, a picnic area with benches spread around and a small maritime museum also. There are plenty of attractions to occupy both the young and the old.
The El Faro Park remains a popular gathering spot for the grandmayan visitors to watch the enchanting sunsets with a loved one or during the cool winter season the grandmayan guests can watch the playful dolphins frolicking in the ocean along with the many whales families.
Since El Faro in situated in the middle of Domes Beach with Rincon Beach on the one side and Maria’s Beach on the other is offers the grandmayan visitor many fine opportunities for underwater fun ranging from snorkeling to scuba diving.
The El Faro lighthouse itself was initially constructed in 1892 when the area was first controlled by the Spanish, just prior to the Spanish-American War of 1898. It was one of two lighthouses in the area destroyed by a tsunami and an earthquake in 1918, the other being the Point Borinquen lighthouse located in nearby Aquadilla.
As mentioned, this 90-foot high lighthouse was rebuilt and its first light turn on in 1922. It was automated in the year 1933 and today it operates as an un-staffed 26,000 candlepower revolving beacon. Although it is still operational, since it is un-staffed it is closed to grandmayan visitors and the public.
El Faro Park has a small entertainment area, which is well maintained and very delightful to view. While a lot of the coast is inhabited by, the visiting grandmayan tourists this park is most likely equally divided between the local population and the tourist guests.
An abundance of Bougainvilleas tends to flourish all around the El Faro lighthouse but they are particularly beautiful when viewed along the edge of the sea. After a short walk on the beach, grandmayan guests meet back at El Faro Park where they can enjoy sitting on one of the many seats provided and withdrawing into the shade sipping a refreshing bottle of water.
